It took me a month, but I finally went to see Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Tim Burton's newest gothic fantasy. As is almost de rigueur, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter star as the two deranged main characters. Depp is Benjamin Barker, a wronged barber that comes back to town to set things straight. And by that I mean that blood is about to splatter everywhere. Literally. Helping him is Bonham Carter's Ms. Lovett, a woman that claims to make the worst pies in town. And judging by the sorry state her kitchen is in, I tend to believe her.The best thing about Sweeney Todd is how stylish it is --it is, after all, a Tim Burton movie. The sets look great, and everything is dark and shabby and creepy and fairytale-esque. The actors (both the main characters and supporting actors such as Alan Rickman or the priceless Sacha Baron Cohen) are great, and the story is sad and dramatic and twisted.
The worst thing about Sweeney Todd is that it's a musical. I knew it before I went to see it, and I was ready for it to bother me; and even though it wasn't as bad as I was expecting, I wish they had talked more and sung less. I would have liked it much, much better if there had been no songs.
So there you have it. If you like Tim Burton and musicals, you'll love this movie. If you like Tim Burton but musicals aren't your thing, chances are you'll still enjoy the movie. But if you really dislike either one, save yourself some money and read a good book instead.

Como he visto que se acababa el día (en España) y no ponías tu tradicional entrega de NVEEC, he decidido poner el post que tenía preparado. Y como es de cine también, pues queda hasta bien :)
Interesante, porque justo acabo de volver a casa, de ver esta peli. Y coincido en todo lo que has dicho. Los personajes principales están de miedo (nunca mejor dicho), los secundarios, en especial el italo-español Pirelli (a juzgar por su atuendo, atención, es la risa la mezcolanza que hacen aquí) también destacan. La ambientación es fantástica y la historia promete...a priori. Pero el tema del musical...aunque tiene puntos muy buenos, álgidos, en general impide más que construye una buena peli.
Como musical le da tres vueltas "Moulin Rouge". Como trabajo actoral, "Sweeny Todd" se las da a la anterior.
No sé, he encontrado cosas interesantes pero esperaba algo más.
"No country for old men" ésta sí que me dejó más que satisfecho!!

Sobre Sweeney Todd, como amante de los musicales y fan de Tim Burton (siempre que no se me miente O Planeta Os Macacos), supongo que debo dar por hecho que me va a encantar. Genial entonces. No recuerdo una peli del Burton que no me haya parecido poco menos que soberbia (de nuevo, obviando OPOM). Y sí, incluyendo estoy las dos primeras adaptaciones de Batman.
Y, nada, Jorge, habrá que ver No Country For Old Men sí o sí. Como ya dije en otro lado, me encantan los Coen. :)

Y Jorge, ya veo que estamos de acuerdo. Y lo de Sacha Baron Cohen haciendo de Signor Pirelli es en verdad digno de verse. El caso es que lo estaba mirando, con ese traje de luces y ese pelo que me lleva, y estaba preguntándome por qué si tiene acento italiano y se llama Pirelli va vestido de torero. Al menos, el bueno de Borat es gracioso :)

Pues no lo sé. A ver... El 15 de Febrero, según IMDb. No queda tanto, entonces. No sé si la acabaré yendo a ver, pero está bien saberlo. :)
Ya nos dirás qué te parece cuando la veas. Y si la estrenan el 15, qué quieres que te diga: ¿qué mejor película para ir con tu chica a celebrar el día de San Valentín? Hehehehe...
