GMeP: Magnolia - Rain Clearing, Breezy Overnight

Today's Great Moment On Screen is extracted from the superb 1999 movie Magnolia, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (not to confuse with the dull Paul W.S. Anderson, please). The movie itself goes about the lives of ten or so characters, very differents in surface, but with similar problems in essence. An extremely beautiful movie, and, to prove it, just see this small clip.
The scene runs for more than three and a half minutes, with the song "Wise Up" by Aimee Mann playing all over it. In a beautifully slow paced rhythm, all the characters sing the song, as if thinking about their miserable lives, their fears and their doubts. One great actor after another fills the screen, in this order: Melora Walters, John C. Reilly, Philip Baker Hall, William H. Macy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jason Robards, Juliane Moore, Tom Cruise (yes, I think he's a great actor indeed) and the kid Jeremy Blackman. Somewhere I read the adjective mesmerizing applied to this scene and I think that definitely it suits it the best.
And the song is fantastic. I didn't buy the Magnolia soundtrack only for its beautiful cover.

Well, you should...
People like Kevin Smith, though, have criticised it for being boring and pretentious. As a matter of fact, only Kevin Smith has done it, that I know of..
A great movie, after all, if you're into that kind of films.
