The Zodiac Speaking

My planned visit to the movies this week resulted in me watching Zodiac, David Fincher’s last work. You all know him: the mind behind splendid movies such as Se7en and Fight Club, director at the same time of definitely not as splendid ones such as Panic Room or the indescribable (and not in a good way) Alien 3.

Zodiac, anyway, I knew it was part of his splendid movies category. All the reviews I’d read or heard of it were practically praises that worshipped its greatness. The movie, well, it is great, that’s for sure. But I’m not placing it in my top 50 best movies of all time list, I can tell you. Probably not even in my top 150 best ones list. Not for nothing IMDb places it right now #162 in their 250 list of best valued movies ever.

Zodiac is the story behind the homonymous serial killer who developed his bloody ‘career’ during past century’s late sixties and seventies. To all my knowledge, as of today the Zodiac case is classified as a cold one. That in mind, I only can praise Mr. Fincher’s work on directing this movie, in the brilliant way he has organized it and how he provides of such a good and constant rhythm to a story of such immense complexity. I’m not going to break now Sunny Jhanna’s policy about the spoilerness of our movie reviews, but let’s say that the story takes place during a lot of short periods of time that unfold in a span of approximately twenty years. Taking that into account (among a few other story facts that of course I’m not going to reveal), this story is a very hard one to write or direct into a movie that works. And this one does work. Indeed it does. David Fincher manages to unify all of the scenes into a relentless pace that, if not a frenetic one, it certainly is not a boring one either.

It wouldn’t be fair to review this movie and not to mention the strong performances with that each and every one of the actors and actresses contribute to the final product. Of course, it couldn’t be the other way, when your cast counts with brilliant names such as Jake Gyllenhaal (half of 2005’s cinema most famous couple), Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Brian Cox or Philip Baker Hall.

The only problem that I find in this movie is that it felt a little bit too long. Or maybe that was because of me, because of that part of me that was tired and regretted watching the night pass instead of any of the afternoon ones. Anyway, lengthness issues aside, Zodiac is a highly recommendable picture. Two and a half hours that you are not going to regret having spent immersed in it.

ANATEMA!! No sois dignos!!
