A few posts ago, I mentioned Sky Doll, the series created by Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa. As I said before, Barbucci’s artwork is fantastic. It has a decidedly Disney flavor (he used to work for them), and the facial expressions, the costumes, the backgrounds, and the clothing are superb. At the same time, Canepa’s colors are nothing short of outstanding, giving the book a pastel warmth that I, personally, adore.
And what about the story? Well, how could you not love a satire on religion, a story that makes fun of fanatics, popes (actually, they’re female popes, and at one point there were two ruling together), and spotlights the hypocresy and business side of religion. On top of that, sex dolls are all the rage (and they just became legal), and one of them, who seems to be a little different because of her memories that she can actually keep, decides it’s time to move on and get away from her job: a spaceshipwash in which the customers can ogle all they want at the plastic beauties that clean their rides.
I couldn’t have liked the first volume more, with all its satire; and the second and third installments only take things further on, so I encourage everybody to check it out (you can buy it here). As always, you can thank me later.
