Shun the Nonbelievers

Last night I watched Scoop, Woody Allen's second movie with Scarlett Johansson. It's kinda funny, cause up until this year, I had only seen a WA film, the quite forgettable Bullets Over Broadway. However, I went to the movies (The Bijou, not The Rave) in January to check out Match Point (I mean, it had Scarlett Johansson, come on), and I really liked it. So I ended up renting Mighty Aphrodite (que en inglés rima pero en español no) shortly after that, and even though it was cute and entertaining, I didn't like it anywhere near as much as I did Match Point. But on Friday I decided I needed more Woody Allen, and… Okay, that's not completely true. On Friday, I decided I wanted more Scarlett Johansson, and then I came across Scoop at the Blockbuster near my apartment. Since I had really liked Allen's and Johansson's first collaboration, I went ahead and rented it. And truth is, I really enjoyed it. It's a fun, upbeat, vastly entertaining movie. You're never quite sure what's going to happen next, and the dialogue is quite funny. Woody Allen ends up being a bit too annoying at the end, because he keeps doing the same thing over and over again; but Hugh Jackman is good, and Scarlett Johansson is fantastic. Besides being a really good actress and ridiculously gorgeous (remember: Sexiest Woman Alive), the fact that she spends the whole movie wearing these big, round glasses only makes her all the more attractive. So yeah, go ahead and rent it. If nothing else, you can always drool at her beautiful face. But there's more to the movie than that, I promise!

I think somebody needs to count how many pictures of Scarlett Johansson we have in this blog. From the top of my head, I think I remember 4, maybe 5. And talking about pictures, the one accompanying this post is not from Scoop, but The Island. I just thought she looked beautiful on that one.
And talking about beautiful blondes, maybe I should write a post about my Top 10 Blondes, to go with the Top 10 Brunettes I posted a while ago. Hmmm...

Yep. that would be an interesting post. Although everybody knows who the first blonde would be, there is probably enough smoking hot blondes around that it would be a juicy group.
Obviously (not that you care, but I do) #1 for me is my personal blonde bombshell (i.e. mi señora esposa). but, alas, that is not your list.

By the by, really cool car you got goin' on.

Scoop, nice movie, "ok" movie, great actress!! It seems like this girl has been acting for ages and she is only, what? 20?? I can´t believe it.
I agree with finn5fel that Match Point is much better movie, though it´s not a funny film (strange thing for Woody...). Scarlet is gorgeous, however those big glasses on Scoop are kinda...fucking sexy!!!
Hey, why don´t you pick "Curse of the Jade Scorpion" or "Small Time Crooks" 2 of my favorites: funny, witty and so sarcastic. Ok, there is no Scarlet on that :(

The only movie I've actually seen her in was Lost in Translation which was a craptastic film...so I can't really say much about Ms. Johansson as of yet as an actress.

But anywho, I thought I'd just comment on your blog but what I'm REALLY commenting for is to tell Mario that Polly had her baby! Yep, she had him last night....7 lbs. and some odd ounces. So for the next however many weeks I'll be taking charge over Ridgemont....scary huh??

Baby issues apart (congratulations, Polly!), I urge finn5fel to post that not-yet-promised Top Ten about his favourite blondes. I'm expecting it, pal.
In regard of Mrs. Johansson, I don't know how many years she has, but I bet she's no more than twenty-something (thirty-something, tops). I haven't seen Scoop yet, but I really liked (couldn't be the other way) Match Point. Such a beautiful movie, mainly because you can see the two main characters, intelligent and bright characters as they are, develop and fall on the same affair topics and mistakes that everyone falls on.
About Woody Allen, I can't remember a movie of him that I didn't like. Bullets Over Broadway is so NOT forgettable, by the way. There are a bunch of Allen's movies that I can call favourites of mine, so I won't mention them all. But if you wanna laugh till it aches, try watching "Take the Money and Run"; and if you wanna be drepressed, try "Manhattan" instead.
And if you wanna get bored to tears, then, yes, watch "Lost in Translation". It's really not that a bad movie... but it's boring...

Oh, and I was thinking... To laugh so hard that your head would explode and your dog would eat it, if you fancy that (there are strange people out there), give Woody Allen's books a try. I'm thinking now on "Getting Even" and "Without Feathers" ("Cómo Acabar De Una Vez Por Todas Con La Cultura" y "Sin Plumas", en español).
Some of the most damn serious laughs I've had in my whole life I've had them with those two books.

1. Congratulations, Polly! (Not that she'll ever read this, but hey. I'll congratulate her in person when she's back.)

2. Thanks for letting me know, Kristin! I'll visit you (again and again and again) while Polly's out. I got your back!

3. Thanks, Alberto. Next time we see each other, you'll be able to appreciate my new car in all her glory. And I understand your first choice in your Top 10 Blondes :)

4. Scarlett Goddess Johansson turned 22 last Wednesday, November 22nd. I almost feel dirty worshipping such a young woman. But truth is she looks and acts older than that!

5. Jorge, it's really interesting you mention Small Time Crooks and The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, because of all of Woody Allen's movies I haven't seen, I'm only interested in watching those two. Crazy! (Or that you have good taste, which I know for a fact you have.)

6. Halagan, I've never seen Lost in Translation, and I saw Bullets Over Broadway when it first opened, back in... 1993? Something like that. Maybe I was too young (certainly too stupid) to get it.

7. Okay, okay. Top 10 Blondes coming soon...

8. And I can't believe what a varied crowd we got here today. I hope Kristin starts posting on a more regular basis, and it's good to see Alberto after such a long absence! Halagan, you know I [heart] you; and Jorge, thanks for reading and posting lately! I love you too! Well, and Alberto, and EVERYBODY!

9. Damn I'm cheesy!

Well, I am surprised that nobody has mention the classics by Woody Allen, namely (and in no particular order):

1. Bananas
2. Take The Money and Run
3. Todo lo que siempre quiso saber sobre el sexo y nunca se atrevió a preguntar. (not really sure about the original title of this one)
4. El dormilón (not sure of this one either)

To this list I would also add The Purple Rose of Cairo (and I am not sure whether this the title or not, y paso de mirar en IMDB), not because is extremely funny, but just because I think it is a really good film. Another one I would add is Deconstructing Harry, and this one is because I think it was just really well made and very funny too (but maybe that's me and my weird sense of humor)

I really haven't seen many of the latest Allen's films, but of the ones I have seen I can say:

Everybody Says I Love You is not particularly impressing. The only funny thing is seeing Woody Allen running like a headless chicken through Venice chasing Julia Roberts

Celebrity was boring like a mofo

Well, I know they are not precisely new releases, but I'm just trying to save you some time here.

Yep Mario, YOU are cheesy! hahaha :)

I agree with Alberto in, basically all the movies he mentioned! But one in particular, "Deconstructing Harry" is such a good film. I still remember it quite well and last time I watched it was...well quite a few years ago. Especially at the beginning when a couple is making it by the window and the girl´s husband (who is blind by the way and THAT makes it really funny) comes in the room looking for her wife. And she´s answering while her lover is working seriously on...well, I´m sure you all guess what´s he wroking on!! Sooooo funny.

And "Manhattan" it´s kind of depressing but so intelligently made. What a script! I watched it a month ago because La Filmoteca put it again here in Valencia and it was very good.

Guys, keep going with this very good blog. People read you, maybe more of what you think...

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! And if you want to see a really cool movie, check out my next post.

Regarding our audience, thanks again! I hope whoever reads this blog enjoys it!

I agree completely with alberto's choices of WA's filmography. I'd also wanna mention other great movies of his, such as "Annie Hall", "Hannah and Her Sisters" (with Allen's character finding the meaning of life in a Marz Brothers movie) and "Manhattan Murder Mistery" (that end, mimicking Welles' "The Lady from Shanghai", or the tapes sequence already belong to cinema history). So many good movies from old Allen that I can't keep up with them all.
