I just came back from The Rave. Today's event: Grindhouse opened.For those of you who have no idea what Grindhouse is (doubtful, since we're all movie buffs here), it is the new Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino movie. Or movies, in plural, since the film consists of two movies: Planet Terror, directed by Rodriguez, and Death Proof, directed by Tarantino. Plus a bunch of trailers for fake movies that take us back to the exploitation films from long ago. To emulate this look, the movie has been "aged" to look old, overexposed, grainy, and, in a few instances, blurry and with changing colors. And the funniest thing: there are "missing reels" that make the action jump forward!
Planet Terror is a lot of fun. It's basically a zombie movie, with gallons of blood and wild violence. But it is also funny, fast paced, and supremely entertaining. Rose McGowan looks superhot as the one-legged stripper (even hotter when she still has two), Freddy Rodriguez and Josh Brolin are delicious, Marley Shelton is fantastic, and Bruce Willis is… interesting. As usual, I won't reveal anything about the story, but I'll just say it's a fun ride.
The assorted trailers were so funny I was roaring with laughter. The first one was Machete (directed by Rodriguez), and it was funny, but then Werewolf Women from the SS (directed by Rob Zombie) topped it both in hilarity and ludicrousness. After that one, Don't (directed by Edgar Wright) was freaking hysterical, but the last one, Thanksgiving (directed by Eli Roth), was so brutally funny that might have just been the best one.
Death Proof was so much fun -and funny- I'm still chuckling. Kurt Russell is superb, the dialogue is so real you feel like you're eavesdropping on an interesting conversation at a bar, and the story keeps surprising you with twists and developments that glue you to the screen. By the end of the movie (and the ending will leave you flabbergasted), I was almost on the edge of my seat.
To sum it up, both movies were great, and I don't really know which one I liked best. And let's not forget the trailers. (I wonder what they'll do with them in Europe, since they're releasing the films as two separate movies.) I've never been a big fan of either Rodriguez or Tarantino, but this double feature is definitely a must-see. And hey, it only cost me $6! Two cool movies and a bunch of cool fake trailers for only six bucks? It sounds like a great deal to me!

Bueno, tengo muchas ganas de ver Grindhouse, pero no me apetece nada tener que verlas por separado y sin trailers chulos. Quizá me espere al DVD. Espero que no saquen dos aquí en España también.
Ya veremos qué hacen... De momento, parece que aquí la peli ha fracasado en su primer fin de semana, recaudando sólo 11 millones. Al parecer, el que sea tan larga y el que fuera fin de semana de pascua (las familias fueron a ver... películas familiares) la ha perjudicado bastante...
Así que el fin de semana de pascua les ha hecho la pascua. En fin, es una lástima, desde luego, ver algunas buenas películas que no consiguen recaudar lo que deberían. De todos modos, espero que lo de Grindhouse sea un típico caso de boca a boca y se esté sus cuatro meses en cartel.
Ya veremos. Ayer, en Attack of the Show, comentaban que tal vez las dsitribuirían como dos películas separadas dentro de poco (como harán en Europa), para ver si así la gente se animaba más a ir, por aquello de no estarse más de 3 horas metidos en el cine.
Otra cosa que también mencionaron en AOTS y que es muy cierta es que en las entrevistas y promociones, Rodríguez y Tarantino se dedicaron más a explicar el concepto de Grindhouse que a promocionar Death Proof y Planet Terror por sí mismas, y tal vez eso fuera un error de marketing. En fin. Espero que recaude más, ya sea por separado o como unidad única, porque la verdad es que ambas son entretenidísimas. Y, que yo sepa, Tarantino tiene más fans de lo que esa recaudación apunta.
Lo que espero es que saquen en DVD las dos películas en formato sesión doble con trailers y todo. Es lo que me interesa, básicamente. Las obras de cada artista deberían ser siempre como originalmente fueron concebidas (en el '77).
Hahahaha. Estoy de acuerdo. Aunque he leído que Tarantino está trabajando en una versión extendida de Death Proof para presentarla en Cannes, así que ya me lo imagino: lanzamiento original en DVD de Grindhouse como sesión doble, tráilers y todo. Después, edición de coleccionista. Y después, lanzamiento de ambas pelis por separado, en versiones extendidas. Recordad este post cuando suceda.
Jajaja. No me jugaría la cabeza contra ello, mi querido Fel. Ni otras partes de mi anatomía menos queridas pero no por ello menos valiosas.
Pues eso: que sabemos cómo piensa esta gente.
