I guess the title pretty much gives it away: I really enjoyed (500) Days of Summer, the new movie starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. And it wasn't only because Zooey Deschanel is cute beyond description. Really.
I think my favorite part was the clever editing of the movie, which presents a somewhat typical romance story in a refreshingly new way that makes the audience think they've never seen anything quite like it. 500DOS, written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber and directed by Marc Webb, tells the story of Tom and Summer, how they meet, how they start going out, and what happens next. However, saying what happens "next" is kind of tricky, seeing as the movie isn't told in strict chronological order, and you might witness what happened on day 243 before you find out what went on on day 87, to give you an example. But the cleverest part was probably the scene presented in split screen, with "expectations" on the left, and "reality" on the right. That was one of the most heart-rending moments in the movie, and there were quite a few of those. The same is true for the funny parts, of which 500DOS has several scattered throughout the film. I thought the writers balanced comedy and drama very well, and the great acting by Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel made the characters compelling and utterly believable. (And I must mention Chloe Moretz as Gordon-Levitt's younger sister --she was a riot!)
So, if you're in the mood for a romantic movie (and please notice I didn't say "romantic comedy", which this certainly isn't), don't hesitate and go have some calendar confusion with Summer. I think you'll like it.
