Diez pelis estupendas

Aquí tenéis mi lista de las diez películas que más me han gustado este año. La verdad es que varios puestos podrían cambiarse un poco y tampoco pasaría nada, pero como tengo que escoger un orden concreto, bien vale éste:

Como ya comenté todas estas películas en su día, no voy a repetirme, así que, si estáis interesados en ver qué dije sobre cada una de ellas, no tenéis más que hacer click en la etiqueta "movies" ahí debajo, y leer la que os interese. Ya me diréis qué os parecen mis selecciones, y cuáles han sido vuestras pelis favoritas de 2011!

La identidad de Bourne

Otra de las películas que llevaba mucho tiempo queriendo ver es La identidad de Bourne, de la que había leído muy buenas críticas y de la que solo había visto la segunda parte. Como gran seguidor de la saga de novelas de Bourne, la película me decepcionó un poco dado que es bastante inferior al libro en lo que a la intriga se refiere. No obstante, he de reconocer que es una muy buena cinta de acción, los personajes están muy bien llevados, y las escenas de acción (que suponen casi todo el metraje) son trepidantes. Matt Damon hace unas peleas muy creíbles y espectaculares por la velocidad de sus movimientos, y la persecución en coche por París es de las mejores que he visto.

Algunas cosas son chorradas, como la de meterte bajo la piel un láser donde tienes tu número de cuenta y un banco cuando los espías tienen todo eso en la cabeza, pero bueno.

En resumen: si tenéis tiempo, es una saga muy entretenida, aunque yo recomiendo mucho más los libros…. al menos hasta el tercero, pues luego ya se vuelve un poco cansina.

Family Portrait

Here you have a picture I drew for my wife as a Christmas present. It features our family in front of our house, and if it looks like it took hours upon hours to finish is because it did. I drew the whole thing freehand in pencil first, then I went over most of the lines with a ruler to fix the worst offenders, and then I inked everything with my new Copic pens freehand so that it would look a little bit more organic and there wouldn't be any completely straight lines that made certain elements look boxy or too geometrically precise.

My wife loved the picture, and I had a lot of fun working on it, so I couldn't be happier with the results. I confess that, looking at it now, I would change a couple of things that I could have done better, but I guess that's the kind of attitude I need to improve and do better every time. In any case, and self-criticism aside, I am very pleased with the picture, and my wife thinks it will look great in our living room. I hope you like it too!

Top 5 Reads of 2011

It's been a while since I've made a list of things I like, so here you have the five reads I have enjoyed the most in 2011:

1. Bakuman

I have only read the first four volumes, but I can say this series is what I have enjoyed reading the most this year. And I know it's not a book, so sue me.

2. Changes

The twelfth book in The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher is an awesome read, just like the previous eleven. Here you have my original praise for it.

3. Full Dark, No Stars

Everybody knows I love Stephen King, and this collection of four novellas I originally discussed here was a blast to read.

4. Keys to the Demon Prison

The last book in the Fablehaven series was a great way to close the saga. I already told you about it here, but don't take my word for it and read it for yourselves.

5. The Last Olympian

The last book in the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series was as much fun as the previous four, and you need to start reading these novels if you haven't already, because you're in for a treat.

And that's it for this year. I realize four out of my five picks are series, two of them finite, two of them open-ended, which is not only interesting but must also mean something that escapes me. In any case, here's to hoping that 2012 brings lots of good reading material!

Spectacular Adventures

Would you think I'm crazy if I claimed The Adventures of Tintin might just be the best movie I've seen this year? I've only read a couple volumes of the comic book series, and I remember watching one or two animated features back when I was little, but that's pretty much all the contact I've ever had with the character. Put it another way, I am not exactly a fan of the character, which means I wasn't predisposed to liking this movie no matter what. However, Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are two of today's most acclaimed directors and producers for a reason, and it shows. The Adventures of Tintin is a rollercoaster of a movie in the best Spielbergian tradition (it reminded me of Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade quite a bit), and the action scenes are wildly imaginative and superbly choreographed. Both characters and dialogue are great, and, along with the action, they all serve a fun, intriguing story that takes you from one place to another, from one extreme situation to the next without giving you time to breathe. By the end of the movie, I was exhausted and exhilarated, and I was overcome with joy and happiness about how much fun I had just had. I could have walked back into the theater and watched the movie a second time, I kid you not. Except for A Game of Shadows, I hadn't had this much fun at the movie theater in a really long time, so, if you are looking for a movie to make you forget about the world outside for a couple of hours, do yourself a favor and go see The Adventures of Tintin. You won't regret it!

Héroes fuera de órbita

Héroes fuera de órbita es una de esas películas que llevo intentando ver desde que salió, y que nunca he conseguido ver por diferentes motivos. La película es una comedia ácida que arremete contra todos los actores que viven de firmar fotos en convenciones dado que participaron hace años en una serie de éxito (véase Star Trek, Star Wars, y posiblemente todo lo que empiece por Star), y que no han vuelto a tener un éxito en sus carreras. Los protagonistas, Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, y Tony Shalhoub encarnan a los actores de la serie Galaxy Quest, que en sus tiempos fue un éxito, y que ahora están prácticamente acabados hasta que una raza extraterrestre que cree que lo que ven en la tele es cierto les construyen su nave y los llevan al espacio para que les salven del malo maloso de turno. La película es divertida, tiene buenos efectos especiales, está repleta de guiños a las series mencionadas, y cuenta con más de una escena memorable, como la del pasillo lleno de fuego y planchas metálicas que chafan gente.

En resumen, Héroes fuera de órbita es una peli muy entretenida para verla un fin de semana.

A Game of Shadows

My wife and I went to see Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and I loved it almost as much as the first one. Everything worked for me: the acting, the dialogue, the plot twists, the characters, the music, the action pieces... The chemistry between Holmes and Watson is one of the moving forces behind the movie, and Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law were once again perfect as the main characters, and their "relationship," as Holmes himself puts it in the film, was funny, moving, complex, and thoroughly enjoyable.

In sum, I found this second chapter in the series very well crafted and entertaining, and I recommend it to everyone. One of my top ten movies of the year for sure!

Anthology

The second volume of the 11 O'Clock Comics Low Concept anthology is going to feature a five-page story written and drawn by yours truly. If you would like to support me and the book, please go here and pledge your contribution. There are several options, the cheaper ones being:

Guardian of the Gateway

Here you have another picture for Gateway 2 Nowhere. They keep asking me to be "more metal," but I am afraid this is as metal as I can get. In any case, the picture was fun to draw, and I hope they like it at least as much as the previous drawings I've done for them!

Casconauta

Aquí tenéis un dibujillo de esos rápidos que me gusta hacer en las reuniones de profesores para escuchar mejor y prestar más atención. La idea era dibujar un astronauta, pero el casco acabó pareciéndose más a un casco de motorista que a una escafandra sideral, con lo que el cosmonauta terminó teniendo un aspecto un tanto extraño. El dibujo está hecho directamente a bolígrafo, y aunque me gustaría añadir un monstruo a la composición, no creo que suceda jamás, así que tendremos que conformarnos con lo que hay. Enjoy!

Butlers of the Sea

Here you have a picture I finally found time to draw after having had it in my head for about two months. Back in early October, when my wife and I went to Cumberland Island, the armies of crabs who live there made me realize that crabs look like butlers, what with the way they walk and how they hold their big pincers up. Next thing you know, the idea for this picture had formed in my head, but I've been busy pursuing other artistic endeavors and it is only now that I've found the time to commit it to paper. I think the picture turned out cute and funny, and I hope you both like it and join me in thanking crabs for all they do. We really appreciate it.

El anillo de Salomón

El anillo de Salomón es una precuela de la primera saga de Bartimeo ambientada en Israel, cuando el rey Salomón mandaba por esos lares. Nos trae una nueva y divertida aventura del genio de Uruk, en la que debe enfrentarse a un nuevo amo, cruel y despiadado, al que no le hace ni puñetera gracia el sentido del humor y el sarcasmo de nuestro genio favorito.

La novela es bastante entretenida, y cuenta con diálogos muy divertidos (sobre todo los de Bartimeo), con acción a raudales, y con un planteamiento, que, desafortunadamente, resulta un poco simple. Los personajes son muy interesantes, tanto los principales como los pocos secundarios que aparecen.

En resumen, me lo he pasado muy bien leyendo este libro; pues es como reencontrarte con un viejo amigo al que no ves hace mucho tiempo. Sólo espero que la próxima novela no tarde tantos años en llegar.

Muy recomendable.

Artist vs Artist

The fourth volume of Bakuman is the best one so far, which is saying a lot, because the previous three volumes were amazing. I found myself helplessly turning the pages, feeling for the characters, laughing with their triumphs and being saddened by their failures. And not only did I root for the main characters, Mashiro and Takagi, but for the supporting ones as well, such as Fukuda and Mr. Nakai. I wanted them all to get their own series so bad, I was devastated when some of them didn't get one. Fortunately, there is always next volume.

The artwork in Bakuman continues to be terrific, and the story is extraordinary. As a matter of fact, I think this is the best series I'm currently following. Every chapter is an exhilarating read, a storm of laughs and success, of failure and disappointment. Every character is interesting and compelling, and I follow each one of them with a heretofore unseen passion. Artists, editors, main characters, supporting characters: it matters not, because I am so invested in all of them that, by the time I reach the last page, my whole body is coiled with tension, hoping for the best but trying to steel myself for the worst. Then I need to remind myself these people aren't real, and that this is only a manga. "Only a manga," what a joke. This series is a must-read for everyone who has even the most passing of interests in comics, art, chasing your dreams, and life in general. If you like any of those things, you will absolutely adore Bakuman. I promise.

Who Let the Demons Out?

It had been two years since I had finished the fourth volume, but I just finally finished reading the fifth book in the Fablehaven series, Keys to the Demon Prison, which was as fun a read as the previous four books were. The characters were great, and Seth's knack to get in trouble leads him to do terrible things in this last volume of the series. (Or things with terrible consequences, to be more accurate.) I won't say anything else because I don't want to spoil the story for you, but if you haven't read the series, you're in for a treat. I wish some studios would turn these books into movies, because they would be visually arresting and tremendously compelling films, and I would love to see them on the big screen. However, while we wait for that to happen, pick up the first book and prepare to have the time of your life!

Hugo

Siguiendo con películas cuyo título empieza por H y coincide con el nombre del protagonista, hoy tenemos Hugo, la nueva película de Martin Scorsese que mi querida esposa y yo fuimos a ver la semana pasada. Ni habíamos visto trailers ni sabíamos de qué iba, pero las magníficas críticas que había recibido nos animaron a pasarnos por The Rave, por donde no nos habían visto el pelo desde la terrible secuela de The Hangover. Y menos mal que fuimos a verla, porque tanto a Crystal como a mí nos pareció una de las mejores películas del año.

Cuanto menos revele de la historia, mejor, así que solamente diré que es una película de lo más entretenida e impredecible, con personajes únicos y peculiares en situaciones inesperadas e interesantes. Hugo es una de esas películas originales como pocas, en la que nunca sabes qué va a pasar porque nunca has visto otra película remotamente parecida, y que te mantiene con los ojos pegados a la pantalla preguntándote qué pasará a continuación y cómo van a salirle las cosas al entrañable personaje protagonista.

En resumen: si os apetece ver una película magnífica y diferente, no lo dudéis ni un momento y pasaos por el cine más cercano, que por algo es Scorsese uno de los directores más respetados del cine actual. Ya veréis cómo la historia os sorprende, os engancha, y os hace pasar dos horas de lo más gratas.

Hanna

Hanna es una película con un planteamiento no muy original: ex-agente de la CIA se escapa con su hija huyendo de una jefa malvada, la cual mata a la madre de la pequeña. Lo nuevo es que el amigo entrena a su hija como una asesina brutal para vengarse y librarse de la ex-jefa.

La actuación de la niña Saoirse Ronan es realmente buena. Eric Bana, como padre, lo hace bien, y Cate Blanchett como zorra sin escrúpulos está genial. Mención especial a la familia de hippies/pijos que se encuentran en Marruecos: lo bordan.

Otra mencion especial a que pasan por España y como no se encuentran con un campamento gitano con bailaoras, gente haciendo palmas, una hoguera....les falta la cabra.

La película está muy bien llevada, aunque es un tanto inverosímil, y se ve que tiene un presupuesto un poco bajo, pero al final la cagan y no hay nada peor que terminar una buena peli con un final cutre y contradiciendo muchas de las cosas que hemos visto durante la película.

¿Más vale tarde?

El otro día, hablando sobre los nuevos números 1 de DC, Nash dijo que pasaba ya de los comics porque los creadores son unos sinvergüenzas que ni se preocupan por sus personajes ni por trabajar más de lo estrictamente necesario. Aunque normalmente defiendo a los artistas, siempre hay alguno que, por más que lo intente, no puedo defender. Comprendo que hay muchos factores que influyen en el trabajo de un dibujante, y que a veces hay retrasos que no son culpa del artista. Otras veces, no obstante, uno no puede sino preguntarse cómo pueden tener la cara tan dura y cómo los fans aguantan esto. Vienen, por tanto, muy a cuento, estos dos artículos que leí en Newsarama el otro día, en los que se habla de veinte series (diez y diez) de las que no se ha sabido nada en años, y de las que he seleccionado unas cuantas que, por unas razones u otras, nos resultan de interés en este vuestro blog. Preparaos para reíros y sentiros ultrajados al mismo tiempo:

1. Wildcats #2

La nueva serie de Wildcats que Jim Lee iba a dibujar para relanzar el universo Wildstorm constó de exactamente un número, publicado en septiembre de 2006. Desde entonces, los seguidores del coreano han estado esperando el segundo número que, ahora ya todos sabemos, jamás saldrá a la venta. Después de esta tremenda decepción, se empezó otra serie de Wildcats en la que Jim Lee no tenía papel alguno, pero como el universo Wildstorm terminó hecho polvo y ahora es oficialmente parte del universo DC, todo acabó arreglándose por sí solo, ¿no?

2. Spider-Man, dibujada por Jeff Scott Campbell

En abril de 2006 Marvel dio la gran noticia: J. Scott Campbell iba a dibujar Spider-Man. Yo no sé a vosotros, pero a mí se me hizo la boca agua inmediatamente. Por desgracia, han pasado cinco años y medio desde el anuncio, y de la serie no se ha publicado ni una página ni media, aunque desde Marvel dicen que el proyecto sigue adelante, lento pero seguro. Otra cosa es quién se lo crea, claro.

3. Wildsiderz #3

Aproximadamente dos años antes de que se anunciara que Campbell iba a dibujar Spider-Man, el famoso dibujante empezó a promocionar su primer proyecto post-Danger Girl: una serie de comics de superhéroes adolescentes llamada Wildsiderz. Un año después de que empezara la promoción, la serie empezó a publicarse, con Campbell asegurando que tenía varios números terminados, y que la miniserie, que iba a constar de seis números, saldría a la venta sin retrasos. Me río del río. El número cero salió en junio o julio de 2005, si mal no recuerdo, y el primer número siguió un mes después, no sólo a tiempo sino sorprendiendo a propios y extraños. El número 2, sin embargo, se retrasó un par de meses, pero acabó saliendo a la venta en noviembre de 2005. Campbell prometió más de una vez que el tercer número saldría pronto, y cuando en abril de 2006 se anunció que Campbell iba a dibujar Spider-Man, las especulaciones aparecieron por todas partes. Que si primero tenía que terminar Wildsiderz, decían unos. Que si Marvel no le iba a permitir publicar la serie porque pertenecía a la competencia (DC), decían otros. Que si iba a publicar ambos proyectos simultáneamente, fantaseaban unos terceros. Todas estas teorías, unas más verosímiles que otras, ignoraban un hecho básico y fundamental: que Campbell realmente no dibuja comics, diga él lo que diga. De hecho, aquí estamos, en noviembre de 2011, exactamente seis años después de que saliera Wildsiderz #2, y ni su Spider-Man ni el tercer número de Wildsiderz han visto la luz del día ni tienen pinta de verla. Y eso que Campbell dijo que el número tres estaba listo para publicarse. Claro que luego dijo que la serie iba a concluir con el número 3, que sería un número doble y especial. Lo especial sería que saliera, claro.

4. Battle Chasers #10

Probablemente la más larga espera es la que Joe Madureira ha infligido a sus seguidores. La aclamadísima Battle Chasers vio publicado su noveno número en septiembre de 2001, y desde entonces no se ha sabido nada de ella. Sabemos que Joe Mad abandonó los comics para dedicarse a diseñar videojuegos, y ahí quedaba eso. Sin embargo, hace algunos meses se publicó un recopilatorio en tapa dura que incluía los nueve números de la serie. En una entrevista con motivo de dicha publicación, el artista dijo que el recopilatorio había tardado diez años en salir porque quería dibujar algunas páginas para terminar la serie. Según él, siempre había querido darle un final a la serie y que la colección en tomo de lujo estuviera completa, pero ni eso fue capaz de hacer, y mira que tuvo tiempo. El tomito en cuestión, por cierto, cuesta cien (100) dólares del ala, y la historia ni siquiera termina, pues el muy canalla dejó las cosas a medio hacer. Hay que ver qué poca vergüenza.

Lo más cachondo es que estos dibujantes han seguido publicando ilustraciones de un modo u otro. Jim Lee ha dibujado All-Star Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder para DC y ahora dibuja Justice League of America. Scott Campbell ha dibujado decenas de portadas para distintas editoriales, y calendarios y libros de bocetos anuales para vender en convenciones a precios exorbitantes y sacarle la pasta a los aficionados. Y Madureira ha vuelto a Marvel dos veces: una, para dibujar Ultimates 3, miniserie abominable de cinco números que salió en 2008; y otra, para dibujar Avenging Spider-Man, que se está publicando ahora mismo.

En resumen: que Nash tiene buenas razones para mosquearse, aunque, afortunadamente, no todos los dibujantes profesionales ignoran el significado de la palabra "profesional", y hay un montón que cumplen mes tras mes, año tras año. Son las estrellas que se piensan que los fans los van a seguir a donde sea y van a esperar los años que haga falta entre números los que demuestran que la ética de trabajo es para otros. Por la misma regla de tres, que sus comics también los compren otros.

The Illustrated Elephant

Here you have a picture I drew in class while my students watched a video. I did the basic sketch with pencil, and then worked out the details directly with ink. I like how big he looks, and I think he turned out rather nicely, so I hope you like it too!

Tropa de élite 2

En esta segunda parte, nuestro protagonista al mando del batallón encargado de limpiar las favelas de Río de Janeiro es destinado a un puesto de Inteligencia tras una acción bastante desafortunada en una cárcel, ya que los políticos corruptos no lo quieren tener en las calles pero es un héroe y tampoco lo pueden echar. Desde este nuevo puesto sigue luchando contra el narcotráfico, pero ahora también contra los políticos y policías corruptos que son todavía peores. Una película muy cruda pero muy real, donde te das cuenta que en algunos lugares del planeta la vida de la gente no vale nada.

Los personajes son muy sólidos, y las actuaciones son muy buenas, especialmente las del presentador/político y el poli corrupto jefe de la mafia. En lo que a la acción se refiere, en esta parte hay mucha menos que en la anterior, pero su trama política es mucho más interesante. Como ya os podéis imaginar, creo que esta película es muy recomendable.

A toda vela

Aquí tenéis la ilustración para la parte de detrás de la camiseta que una de mis estudiantes me pidió que dibujara para su clase. Sus instrucciones se limitaron a "dibuja un barco con las reglas del juego en su interior," así que aquí sí que tuve más libertad para dibujar, y me lo pasé mucho mejor que dibujando el salvavidas. Con respecto a las reglas del juego, no me preguntéis nada, porque no tengo ni idea ni de cómo se juega ni de qué significan los crípticos mensajes que acompañan a cada número. Si me dan una camiseta cuando estén hechas todas, ya le haré una foto para que la veáis.

Salvavidas

El otro día, una de mis estudiantes vino a pedirme que dibujara algo para una camiseta que su clase (décimo curso, o segundo de BUP en aquellos tiempos de educación cabal y razonable) va a hacer. La chica venía bien preparada, pues traía el diseño que sus compañeras de clase había elegido: un salvavidas en la parte de delante, y un barco detrás. El salvavidas debía llevar el nombre de la escuela, su clase, y el nombre del evento que estas camisetas conmemoran, con lo que realmente no había demasiado que yo pudiera hacer o aportar, excepto por dibujar lo que me pedían. El resultado, bastante cumplidor, lo podéis ver aquí al lado. El barco, cómo no, me lo guardo para la siguiente entrada.

Plagiarism

The editor of the school's newspaper asked me for another cartoon for their second issue. Just like it happened with the first one, it was my wife who came up with the idea for the picture, and I loved it. What made her come up with the idea was the fact that a local photographer has decided to start plagiarizing poses and ideas my wife uses in her photographs, which, needless to say, we find both insulting and unprofessional. On top of that, she has been spying on us and having friends of hers call us to find out about prices, rates, and other information. To sum it up, this photographer has decided to start imitating what my wife does, and as it tends to be the case, the pale imitations she is producing are a far cry from the originals she is stealing from. And since plagiarism is always a current topic of conversation in schools, we thought the cartoon would be relevant for the school's newspaper, and so I submitted this illustration to the editor. I hope you like it!

Las piezas encajan

El otro día fui a ver Paranormal Activity 3 con mi querida esposa. Ambos somos entusiastas seguidores de la serie de películas de miedo, y dado que nos encantan las dos primeras entregas, ni nos lo pensamos a la hora de aflojar la pasta para ver la tercera. Ni qué decir tiene, la película nos encantó, pero lo que más nos gustó fue ver cómo encajan las piezas en la historia que ya conocíamos.

Por si no sabéis nada de la serie, diré que la segunda película no es una secuela tradicional en la que todo vuelve a pasar, o lo mismo le pasa a personas diferentes. El guión, muy astuto, ofrece una nueva perspectiva que explica parte de los sucesos narrados en la primera película a la vez que expande el número de personajes principales y la historia y mitología de la serie. Siguiendo este ejemplo, la tercera parte es más bien una precuela que explica lo que en principio parece el origen de los fenómenos paranormales que sufren los protagonistas, y en la que se presentan nuevos personajes y se arroja nueva luz sobre eventos sucedidos en anteriores películas de la serie. Sinceramente, ésta me parece una forma muy inteligente de hacer secuelas, y espero que la cuarta siga el buen camino que sus predecesoras han creado.

Giant Sized!

Last weekend, my wife and I went to see two movies at the IMAX theater downtown. We saw them back to back, and we really enjoyed both, even though they were very different from one another.

The first movie was Tornado Alley, a documentary better explained as "the true story behind the movie Twister." While this is not completely accurate, it gives you a pretty good idea of what you're in for: storm chasers trying to get as close to a tornado as possible so that they can gather data to help increase the warning time for people living in what's known as Tornado Alley. (Plus, it's narrated by Bill Paxton!) The movie was fun, but the end was a little bit disappointing, as the one shot the director had been chasing for eight years was not as spectacular as (a) other shots in the movie, or (b) what the audience had been anticipating. Still, it was fun, and it looked great on an IMAX screen.

The second one was the clear winner, though, and you'll see why in a second. Born to Be Wild 3D tells the story of two different animal sanctuaries: one in Kenya, and one in Borneo. In Kenya, we meet a herd of orphaned elephants the people working there are raising until they're ready to go back into the wild. In Borneo, we meet a herd of orphaned orangutans the people working there are raising until they're ready to go back into the wild. Do you see a pattern? Baby animals are always cute, and this documentary, narrated by Morgan Freeman, radiates cuteness in every single scene. Plus, the 3D is incredibly immersive, and the picture quality is tremendously crisp. So, if you love animals and nature, do not hesitate and check this movie out!

Los guerreros del sol

Como hace tiempo que no hay nada interesante en el cine, he decidido volver a ver películas de los 80, y para comenzar he elegido un clásico de serie B: Los guerreros del sol. Creo que es la primera vez que me alegro de una traducción, ya que en inglés la película se tituló Solar Babies.

En un futuro apocalíptico donde toda el agua la controla el gobierno (por supuesto opresor y cruel), un grupo de huérfanos que sobreviven en un orfanato en mitad de un desierto y que para divertirse juegan a una especie de hockey sobre patines descubren una esfera con poderes que puede liberar el agua y de paso darles un futuro mejor. Como no podría ser menos, un malvado policía y su joven ayudante, que es un antiguo rival de nuestros protagonistas, intentarán capturarlos y destruir la esfera para dejar el orden de las cosas tal y como está.

Los guerreros del sol es una película sin pretensiones y entretenida, con unos efectos especiales decentillos, y unos personajes bastante planos. Lo más destacable es que la mayoría de estos chavalines son ahora actores conocidos, como Peter de Luise, Jason Patric o Jami Gertz. Y, curiosamente, estos dos últimos coincidirían también en el clásico Jóvenes ocultos.

Como curiosidad, deciros que la película se rodó en los desiertos de Almería, y debieron asfaltar medio desierto, ya que la mitad de las veces van patinando. Sí: patinando por el desierto. Como lo oís.

I just finished the third volume of Bakuman, and all I can say is that this is as outstanding a series as you're going to find. In this volume, artist Mashiro starts working as an assistant to his rival, Eiji Nizuma, to see what he can learn from him. This situation leads to one of the greatest scenes in volume 3 as Nizuma is schooled by his assistants, Mashiro and Fukuda, who tell him how he can make his manga better. This whole conversation about creating comics and how to make them interesting for the reader was, well very interesting for the reader, and, as you can see, very metatextual, which is one of the many things I am enjoying about this book. So if you're not reading Bakuman, stop reading this post and pick up this manga!

We're Six!

Happy birthday, Sunny Jhanna! Today, we turn six, and we had a very talented chef make a cake for us to celebrate. I drew this sketch in about forty minutes during a meeting on Wednesday, and I think it turned out kind of cute. At any rate, I hope you like it, and that you keep reading us for the next six years!

I just finished reading the second volume of Bakuman, and I have to say I'm completely hooked to the series. I am rooting for Mashiro and Takagi like I haven't rooted for a character in years, and I hope they succeed in becoming famous manga artists.

In this volume, they start working with Mr. Hattori, an editor at Shueisha that is impressed enough with their work to give them a chance to prove themselves. From there, sleepless nights, worries, an unexpected nemesis, and the unbridled desire to fulfill their dream carry the protagonist couple through hundreds of pages in an exhilarating ride that leaves the reader breathless and wanting more. It's a good thing I've already bought volume three!

Preguntilla

Se acaba de abrir el plazo para mandar dibujos a Spectrum, el libraco enorme de ilustraciones de fantasía, ciencia-ficción, horror, surrealismo y lo sobrenatural que sale cada año por estas fechas. El año pasado compré, por primera vez, la publicación, que este año celebra su decimoctavo cumpleaños, y el contenido resultó ser de tan alta calidad que me prometí a mí mismo comprarla este año también. No sólo eso, sino que se me ocurrió que podía suscribirme a su lista de correo electrónico para que me notificaran cuándo se abría el plazo para mandar contribuciones para el decimonoveno volumen. Básicamente, puede mandar ilustraciones quien quiera, siempre y cuando pague la tarifa impuesta por la organización, pero como esto es un concurso y hay jurado, no todos los trabajos enviados acaban publicados en la antología, así que te arriesgas a pagar y no sacar nada a cambio. De todas formas, y como participar no cuesta mucho, me estoy planteando mandar algo, y dado que el dibujo tiene que haber sido creado entre enero de 2011 y enero de 2012, la pregunta que adelantaba en el título de esta entrada es: ¿cuál pensáis que es el mejor dibujo que he hecho este año? Como ya he señalado antes, la temática debe ser la arriba citada, y aunque no descarto hacer un dibujo nuevo para mandarlo, estaría bien poder usar algo que ya tenga hecho y ahorrarme el trabajo. Así que, decidme cuál pensáis que es mi mejor dibujo de 2011, a ver qué pasa.

Halloween!

Halloween is back, and so is the cherished Jhannian tradition of wishing our dedicated readers a wonderful holiday with a picture by yours truly. Yes, I know we skipped last year, but it won't happen again... Actually, as it happens, it almost happened again this year. I drew this baby from beginning to end in forty minutes. That includes pencils, colors, and inks, so if the drawing isn't very detailed, well, that's why. I simply didn't want to let another Halloween go by without celebrating it, so there you go. Go get your candy!

One-Eyed Pirate

Here you have yet another sketch I drew while sitting (and listening) in a meeting. Just like the pensive old man I showed you a couple of days ago, I drew this one with a black pen and nothing else, and I kind of like how it turned out. I'm really enjoying working in this style, which I'm coming to think of as my "true style" for a variety of reasons. At any rate, I hope you like it!

Read This!

I don't care if you like manga or not --you need to start reading Bakuman, the formidable series by Death Note creators Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. I have only read the first volume, and I already find myself in love with the story, the characters, and the artwork. In short, Bakuman is the story of two guys who want to become manga artists, and so they put a proposal together and submit it to Shueisha. I haven't read anything beyond that point, so I don't know what happens next, but what I have read was so incredibly compelling I had to run to my laptop and write these few lines. Aquí tenéis una de esas ideas raras que me vienen a la cabeza de forma inesperada. Estaba sentado en el sofá leyendo o jugando a The Saboteur cuando de pronto se me apareció esta imagen en mi inquieta cabecita. ¿Un ángel con motosierra?, me dije a mí mismo, sorprendido ante la extravagante idea. ¿Por qué no? Y dicho y hecho: me puse manos a la obra, y en cuestión de cuarenta minutos tenía el dibujo terminado. Si Murillo levantara la cabeza...

The New 52

As you may or may not know by now, DC Comics has rebooted the whole DC Universe with 52 new number ones. I have never really followed any DC books, and I am pretty sick and tired of superhero comics, yet I found myself interested in trying out some of their series. Not only that, but, for the first time ever, I bought them digitally, so I said goodbye to good old paper and dived into the digital era of comics. And what do you know, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I only bought four out of the fifty-two books, but I had a great time reading the ones I got. The first one I bought was Red Hood & the Outlaws #1, mostly because the tremendous Kenneth Rocafort drew the issue. I didn't know what it was about or who the characters were, but the beauty of The New 52 is that you don't have to. Therefore, I approached it without fear, and I had a blast. Scott Lobdell's story is interesting and fun, and the artwork out of this world, so make sure you check it out.

The second book I read was Voodoo #1. DC is integrating some of the Wildstorm Universe characters into the DC universe proper, and since I loved Ron Marz from Witchblade, and I remembered and liked Sami Basri from the same title, I thought I'd give it a try. Voodoo was definitely the weakest of the four comic books I read, yet it was still interesting and I will most likely get the trade when it comes out.

Batman #1 was my third purchase. I have never been a huge Batman fan, but the 11 O'Clock Comics guys were praising Scott Snyder's story, and I've always liked Greg Capullo's art, so I gave it a try. I didn't think it was as formidable a book as my favorite podcasters found it to be, but it was a very solid issue and I enjoyed it very much. And maybe I'm crazy, but I thought Capullo was drawing faces like he was Humberto Ramos. Did anyone notice this as well?

Last but not least, I bought the first issue of a series I had never ever read before, starring a character I had never read either: Batgirl #1. The art in the previews I had seen online looked good, and so I bought it to see what I thought about it. In short, I found both the story by Gail Simone and the drawings by Ardian Syaf more than competent, and I had a blast reading the book, so I think I will definitely continue to read the series. As a matter of fact, I think this one and Red Hood were my favorite two, so I'm glad I gave it a chance. I would suggest you do the same, and let us know what you think of this incredibly bold move DC has made. I, for one, am definitely willing to support them!

A Very Special Present

Here you have the picture I drew for my wife's birthday. It includes me and our three children wishing her the happiest birthday ever, and, as you can see, we are all ready to party. I had a lot of fun working on this illustration, and I hope you guys like it!

La búsqueda del asesino

Llegamos a la última entrega de la saga de Traspiés Hidalgo. Las cosas habían terminado peor que en El Imperio contraataca en la anterior entrega, pero no mejoran mucho las cosas para nuestro protagonista en este tercer libro; más bien todo lo contrario. Como en anteriores entregas, lo que más echo de menos es la acción; pero, eso sí: cuando la hay, es intensa y bien llevada. Los secundarios siguen creciendo y son parte muy interesante de la historia, a veces eclipsando al propio protagonista. Aparecen nuevos personajes para “ayudar” a Traspiés en su largo viaje en busca de su rey y en su venganza contra su tío. A algunos creo que se les podrían haber sacado bastante más partido, como la pareja de mañosos que le intenta enseñar a manejar esta habilidad mejor, o la juglar.

En definitiva, esta novela es un buen final de saga, aunque algunos pasajes se hacen un poco pesados y el final es demasiado abrupto. Creo que se extendió demasiado en la búsqueda y muy poco en el desenlace. Aun así, es una serie muy recomendable.

The Magician

Here you have one of those weird, off-kilter pictures I am so fond of. The idea for this picture formed in my head out of nowhere, and I put it down on paper pretty much unchanged. I did a basic sketch with pencil, and then moved in with my black pens, working most of the details out directly in ink. And I like how it turned out, because it is strange and we don't really know what's going on. Also, I managed to draw what I saw in my head almost exactly, and those pictures, as the great Adam Hughes once said, are always the ones you like the most. Enjoy!

Grouchy

To continue (and most likely finish) with my Dragon Ball ramblings, here you have a picture of Vegeta, the charismatic bad guy who became a good guy... for the most part. I remember the shock and delight I experienced when Vegeta first turned into a Super Saiyan --he just looked so badass! So much so, that I had to portray him in that state, with his super cool blond hair. I don't know about you, but I still find the Super Saiyan look incredibly powerful and awe-inspiring, even after all these years. Anyway, I hope you like the picture!

Monkey Boy

The great Akira Toriyama used to have a very curvy style when he created the hilarious Dr. Slump and the world-famous Dragon Ball. As Dragon Ball went on and on and stretched for more pages than one would have ever thought possible, he started using a lot of straight lines his style became more angular, sometimes almost blocky. Well, since I've been on a Dragon Ball kick lately, I thought it would be fun to draw good old Goku in my curvy style as a throwback to Toriyama's original way of penciling. I think the resulting picture looks interesting, and drawing it was a nice exercise in style. I hope you like it!

Dibujando a ordenador

Hace poco descubrí cómo se crean los "fondos de pantalla" del League of Legend, el juego al que últimamente estoy enganchado. Es increíble ver cómo se crean estas obras de arte. Lo que más me impresiona es la de veces que borran y vuelven a empezar después de pegarse una currada increíble en una parte del dibujo. Si te paras a pensarlo, la gente que pinta a lápiz, tinta o como sea que no tiene esa opción, son auténticos genios. Está claro que el ordenador ayuda muchísimo en la tarea de estos artistas, pues eso de poder mover al personaje por el fondo, darle la vuelta, y demás sin tener que repetirlo es una pasada. Os pongo el vídeo del último campeón, pero es interesante verlos todos.

A Poster, Revisited

A Girl, Revisited

I was asked to redraw the face of the girl lifting weights for a variety of reasons that don't really matter, and this is the final result. I like the original head a lot better, as I find this one bland and not very interesting, but what can you do? Enjoy!

A Poster

This was the first version of the FITT principle poster. After I turned it in, I was asked to change the font for the acronym, and to redraw the girl's face, so this version of the poster went unused. I still like it a lot, though, and so I thought I'd share it with you. Enjoy!

A Girl

Here you have the fourth and last picture for my FITT poster. I think it's pretty straightforward and does not require an explanation, so I'll spare you my usual verbiage. The next step is to put all the illustrations together in a poster and add some text, so stay tuned for the final product. I hope you like it!

A Clock

The third picture for my FITT poster is a clock, or, more precisely, "twelve hours." I was going to draw a cuckoo-clock, but, in the end, I decided to keep things simple and go with a more straightforward illustration. Also, I was trying to work as fast as possible (the first three pictures took me two hours to complete from beginning to end as I worked simultaneously on all three of them), so this rather simple design suited me fine. I hope you like it!

A Heart

The second picture for my FITT principle poster had to be a heart, so I looked up some references (Google Images might just be one of the best inventions ever), and I produced this pulsing piece of artwork. Does it make your heart beat faster? I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

A Calendar

Here you have a picture of a calendar. If you think this is an unusual subject matter for me, you are right: it is. This drawing is part of a project I have been asked to redesign. Basically, my employers want me to make a poster based on the FITT principle, and the first out of the four pictures I need to draw is a calendar. Stay tuned for the next one!

El estanque de fuego

El Estanque de Fuego: A sabiendas del terrible destino que le espera a la humanidad, los pocos humanos libres que quedan en la Tierra comienzan a moverse para llevar a cabo el ataque final contra los trípodes y los "amos". Will y sus compañeros pasan a la ofensiva contra unos seres mejor armados, más fuertes y tecnológicamente muy superiores. Pero lo que a priori son desventajas ellos lo convierten en un punto fuerte ya que los amos no se esperan un contraataque.

En este último capitulo, los protagonistas maduran un poco más, la acción vuelve a ser trepidante, y la moraleja del libro es que la humanidad es una puta mierda y nos merecemos todas las cosas malas que nos pasen por gilipollas.

Un gran libro, perfecto para adolescentes, rápido de leer y con moraleja.

Dissent

Here you have a picture I drew for the school's newspaper. As usual, they let me do whatever I wanted, and while I was trying to come up with something, my wife had an idea. We usually talk (and complain) about people wanting you to think the way they do, to accept their "values" (read prejudices) and conform, to fit in. In one word: to be one of them because being different and thinking for yourself is not good. She told me I should draw a version of that scenario in which some people who dare to differ are surrounded by an angry mob of people unwilling to accept not only their ideas, but the fact that they could actually have their own beliefs.

The interesting thing about this picture is that I drew it in ink directly. I spent about five minutes sketching the most basic of sketches (how many people I was going to have in the picture and little else), and then I moved in with my black pen immediately. This means that some details and faces would have looked a bit better had I drawn them in pencil beforehand, but the fear and trepidation of working directly with ink was a fun challenge.

In the end, while I don't think this picture is amazing, I think it turned out rather nicely, and I am curious to see how people react to it. Seeing as the last thing I drew for the paper was penguins and lions, I'm sure this will, if nothing else, catch them by surprise. I'll keep you updated!
