Meh Books

I just finished reading Dark Ivory #4 (of 4) and The Dark Tower: Treachery #5 (of 6), and I can summarize both in one word: meh.

The whole Dark Ivory miniseries has been sort of interesting, with sort of okay artwork. However, the fact that issue three came out a really long time ago made me stop caring about the outcome. As a matter of fact, when I saw I got the fourth issue in my box, I thought something along the lines of “What is this? Oh, yeah, that series. Wasn’t it over already?” Pretty bad, right?

In this “last” issue, Ivory discovers where she comes from, and her world is changed forever. But said changes are something we don’t get to see, since this miniseries is only book one of… Three? I think that’s right, but I’m not sure. And honestly, I really don’t care enough to go check.

Treachery #5 is as cool as the previous four, no more, no less. Unfortunately, that means it’s just more of the same. Remember everything I whined about when I talked about issue four? Well, all the problems are still present: the ever-pervasive fog, the lack of backgrounds, the static figures, the vertical compositions. And regarding the plot, well: pretty much nothing happens in this episode either. Man, am I ready for this series to be over. Only one more month!

Me explico.

The Matrix
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
The Blues Brothers
A Knight’s Tale
Secret Window
The Ring
Bring It On
Love Stinks
Finding Nemo
The Incredibles
I, Robot
Hitch
Casino Royale
Stardust
Red Eye
Final Destination
Live Free or Die Hard
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Back to the Future, parts I, II, and III

Stylish Koori

Here you have another quick picture I drew while sitting at a meeting. At the rate I'm going, maybe I should consider creating a "Meeting Sketches" label here on Sunny Jhanna. The protagonist of today's picture is, as you can see, our old friend Koori, who I guess must be cold, since she's wearing a scarf. I drew it directly with a black pen, it took me a few minutes, and there's really nothing else to it. I hope you like it!

Guernica 3D

I confess I don't care too much for Picasso's Guernica, but I understand its importance, its relevance, and all that academic stuff. I actually got to see it in person last June when I was in Madrid, and that was pretty nifty. Anyway, I bet the authors of today's videos like the painting a lot more than I do, and their work unequivocally reflects this love. The first one is an interesting 3D exploration of the terrifying scene of devastation, while the second one tells the story of one of the characters in the painting and mixes it up with some other works of art you're bound to recognize. It’s pretty cool stuff, so go ahead and check it out. Enjoy!

Ambitious Merchant

I showed you my attempt at drawing Anne Boleyn from The Tudors a few days ago. Today, and keeping with my desire to achieve some sort of resemblance between a picture and the person that inspired it, I give you Thomas Boleyn, played in the show by Nick Dunning. I think this picture looks much more like the actor than last month's resembled Natalie Dormer, and for that if nothing else I like it better than my Anne picture. I think this drawing looks more like a caricature than a portrait, but it doesn't really look very caricaturesque. It falls somewhere in the middle of the two extremes, I think: the "cartooninesh" of the former, and the realism of the latter. I think the medium also has something to do with that perception, seeing as I usually draw realistic portraits in pencil, not pen. At any rate, I hope you like it!

WoWx2

I just finished reading World of Warcraft issues 14 and 15, and what I said before about this series still holds true. Issue #14 is clearly the end of the second story arc, and seeing the first trade collected issues 1-7, it's safe to assume the second one will offer issues 8-14 in this practical format. This issue is drawn by Mike Bowden, but his artwork is inked by four different inkers and you can really tell the difference, as they go from very good (I'm thinking Richard Friend, most likely) to quite lame (one of the names I don't recognize).

Issue #15 is drawn by Jon Buran, and writer Walter Simonson begins to tell the tale of a couple of half-orcs. It looks like it could be interesting, but I guess I'll wait until I have a few more issues to read this arc, seeing as it's just beginning.

So, WoW #14 and #15 are okay, but by no means great. Hopefully, the next comic books I read plus all the novels sitting on my To-Read Shelf will prove to be great. Just keep coming back and you'll find out!
