Veintipico

El otro día dije que no iba a comprar libros este año para poder así rebajar el número de ídems que tengo en mi siempre creciente estantería de libros por leer. Para que hagáis una idea de lo que aquí se me acumula, Black Magic Sanction, que mencioné ayer, había estado en mi estantería desde finales de 2010, y eso que es parte de una de mis series favoritas actuales. Más vergonzoso es el caso de The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, la famosa novela del difunto Stieg Larsson que, como prueba esta foto, lleva esperando su turno desde al menos agosto de 2009, y que a saber cuándo me leeré. Al ritmo que voy, y con los varios libros que sé a ciencia cierta me regalarán en marzo, creo que puedo plantarme en diciembre sin haber comprado ninguno, y habiendo terminado con todos los de la foto (de los que, debo decir, ya he leído Congo e Eaters of the Dead). Pero claro: ¿cómo no voy a comprar Ghost Story de Jim Butcher cuando salga en edición de bolsillo este verano, o The Wind Through the Keyhole, la nueva novela de Stephen King que sale en abril y que forma parte de su serie La torre oscura? Tal vez tenga que hacer un par de excepciones...

Blackest Night

I just finished Black Magic Sanction, the eighth book in the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison, and I enjoyed it as much as the previous seven. My dear friend Nash would have hated it, because Rachel keeps trusting the wrong people and having issues killing the bad guys, who she'd rather defeat without having to bury their bodies; but for those of us who like both Rachel and the rest of the cast, this book was a blast. I already have the next volume, Pale Demon, waiting on the shelf, and I can't wait to read it!

El apagón

El apagón junta dos de mis pasiones: los viajes en el tiempo y la segunda guerra mundial. La trama es clásica: tres jóvenes historiadores son enviados a la Inglaterra de la década de 1940 para conocer la época de primera mano. Una se desplaza hasta Londres en pleno bombardeo para observar las vidas de las empleadas de unos grandes almacenes; otro se hace pasar por periodista norteamericano para cubrir la evacuación de Dunquerque; y la última entra a formar parte del servicio de una finca de Warwickshire a fin de observar los numerosos grupos de niños que llegan evacuados de Londres.

El libro está muy bien escrito, y enseguida te engancha. La descripción de los bombardeos, la angustia de la gente y sobre todo de los protagonistas están muy bien logradas. Lo único malo es que los de la editorial son unos cabrones y no te dicen que es una primera parte, y el libro termina como El imperio contraataca. Muy recomendable.

Creepy in Black

My wife and I went to see The Woman in Black last weekend, and we both loved it. The movie is creepy and spooky, very atmospheric, beautifully shot, and it commands all your attention. I found myself coiled in my seat, trying to guess where the next disturbing phenomenon would come from. By the time the credits rolled, I was both exhausted and exhilarated.

On the technical side, I couldn't have been more impressed with Daniel Radcliffe's performance (and his clothes!), and I thought the script very effectively combined moments of tension without dialogue where Radcliffe is "alone" in the house, with more relaxed, outdoor scenes in which he interacts with other characters. This gave the film variety and helped ease some of the accumulated tension, which was masterfully spread throughout the whole movie. I know this is only February, but I am sure The Woman in Black will be one of my favorite movies this year!

While none of those is exactly groundbreaking, I had a great time watching them, so if you are looking for a romantic comedy to watch with your better half, I definitely recommend all of the above. Let me know how you like them!

The Creative Process

Here you have a quick picture I drew today. I wanted to draw myself drawing, and this is what I came up with. I sketched it in pencil first, and then I worked out some of the details directly in ink. The whole thing took me about thirty minutes, so I felt very accomplished. I hope you guys like it!

Juego de sombras

En la segunda entrega de la saga, nuestro amigo Holmes sigue su duelo contra el profesor Moriarty. Las escenas de acción son impresionantes, la recreación del Londres de los inicios de la primera guerra mundial está muy bien, y la trama tiene su gracia.
Los personajes principales continúan con su relación amor- odio, que da pie a las situaciones más divertidas. Me gusta también el homenaje que hace a Dos mulas y una mujer, poniendo la música cuando Holmes monta en el burro…Creo que fui el único que se rió al oír los acordes de tan famosa banda sonora. Lo que no me gustó tanto es que se carguen a la novia de Holmes de forma tan rápida cuando costó tanto salvarla en la primera parte. Y que conociese a Moriarty jode la trama, en mi opinión, pues podía ir, matarlo, y se acabó. No entiendo qué gana persiguiéndole por toda Europa; me parece bastante estúpido.
En definitiva, la peli entretiene, pero tampoco es ninguna obra maestra, así que si tenéis un fin de semana sin planes, alquiladla.
