Reading List: April

A balanced month, with four books and four graphic novels, this is what I read in April:

Wildstorm Revelations
Nemesis, Savant, and Backlash try to prevent the end of the world in this fun comic book written by Scott Beatty and Christos Gage, and drawn by Wes Craig. This book makes you laugh, and the action is continuous and very dynamic. A fun, fun read!

Jumper
The book that inspired the movie, this novel written by Steven Gould has nothing to do with the film I saw last February. Other than having a main character named David Rice who can teleport to different locations, the two stories are so different they could well be two completely unrelated tales. I thought the movie was entertaining, and I really liked the novel.

Minx sampler
Several graphic novels targeting young female readers are showcased in this collection I got for free. As a rule, the stories are interesting and well written, but the artwork is not very good in any of them. I guess young girls like good stories but crappy artwork.

The Goon: Chinatown and the Mystery of Mr. Wicker
A flashback to Goon’s earlier days, Chinatown tells the story of how Goon got his scar, and why he has trouble with women. This had already been hinted at a couple of times, and Eric Powell finally delivers the sad, melancholy tale I already told you about here.

The Escapement (The Engineer trilogy, vol. III)
The story of runaway engineer Ziani Vaatzes comes to an end in the final volume of K.J. Parker’s saga. As I’ve said before, these three books are very interesting and well written, even if the pace is everything but fast. Still, a very enjoyable read!

G is for Gumshoe
Another excellent Kinsey Millhone story by Sue Grafton, this one has Kinsey trying to solve a case while trying to stay alive, since she’s being targeted by a hitman. Very entertaining, if not as great as F is for Fugitive.

Empowered, vol. 3
Adam Warren strikes back, and his whole Empowered cast is back for another book packed with craziness, humor, and damsels in distress. In this volume we find out Emp’s and Ninjette’s real names, we dig into Thugboy’s backstory, and we witness a ridiculously long and violent (but oh so dynamic and well drawn) ninja fight. Looking forward to volume four!

H is for Homicide
Yet another Kinsey Millhone adventure, in which Kinsey investigates some false insurance claims for California Fidelity. It was a good story, but I think it is the least funny of all the books so far. I missed Kinsey’s acute observations and remarks, as despair and gloominess seemed to permeate everything in this book. Still, you could do worse than getting to know this private eye!

Brendan Fraser's Busy Summer

Newsarama interviewed actor Brendan Fraser during the 2008 New York Comic Convention, and they posted the clip on their website. Fraser talks about Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and his love for G.I. Joe and his cameo on the upcoming movie. You might like him or not, but he sure is a funny guy. Check out the interview here!

Organic #37

Bienvenidos una semana más a Organic, el webcómic en el que no solamente puede pasar de todo, sino que, además, pasa. La batalla entre el pulpo- polilla arácnido gigante y Tomatito y sus aliados es cruenta, y parece que el aguerrido guerrero las está pasando moradas… literalmente. ¿Se asfixiará Tomatito antes de que el monstruo sea reducido? ¿Logrará escapar de tan terrible destino para liberar a su hija? Esto es Organic, así que tú decides!

Mr. Lightbulb

Here you have yet another five-minute-or-so sketch I drew on Friday. The theme someone suggested was "light-
bulbs", and this is what I came up with. I wonder how he can pick up stuff, since he has no hands; but then again, he is a lightbulb, so why would he need hands, or feet for that matter? That's what I thought.

Disfrutando de la brisa

Aquí tenéis el primero de una serie de dibujos de los personajes que aparecen en Las crónicas de Dae, posiblemente la serie de humor y fantasía menos leída de la historia. Ya sé que ni hay sombras ni fondos ni color ni nada de nada, pero todo responde a un plan maestro del que todavía no podéis saber nada. En fin, que aquí tenéis a Dae, una de las protagonistas de los relatos, y aguerrida guerrera que da nombre a las serie. Enjoy!

Estrellas familiares

Randy Queen, el creador de Darkchylde, vuelve a la carga con Starfall, serie que Top Cow publicará en cuanto esté completa y puedan asegurar a los lectores que los números saldrán mensualmente sin retrasos. Los dibujos que acompañan al artículo en Newsarama no están mal, muy en la línea de Queen. Sin embargo, lo que me ha llamado la atención es la idea que ha originado la serie, revelada por el propio Queen:

"The High Concept is this: pirates crash land on an uncharted Jungle Planet, and unknowingly unleash a degenerative nanobot technology that turns the local dinosaur and cannibal populace into raging zombies."

Y digo que me ha llamado la atención porque me ha dado la impresión que, si mezclara Decaying con Organic, el resultado sería un producto ciertamente semejante a Starfall. ¿Coincidencia? ¿GMTA? ¿El parecido sólo se lo veo yo porque soy un raro? No dejéis de dejarnos vuestros sesudos comentarios!

Cómo es una partida de Warhammer

Muy buenas. Os subo estas fotos para que veáis cómo es una partida de Warhammer. Las fotos están sacadas en una tienda con mesas chulas y con ejercitos muy, pero que muy bien pintados y personalizados. De hecho, el gigante de hueso que veis lo ha fabricado prácticamente de la nada el chaval.

En la siguiente foto se ve el típico despliegue de dos ejércitos, uno en cada lado de la mesa. Se pueden distiguir los diferentes tipos de unidades, caballerías, infanterías, carros y máquinas de guerra, monstruos y héroes.

Las colinas, bosques y rocas no son sólo decorativos, sino que tienen gran relevancia en el juego. Dependiendo del terreno, te puedes esconder para que no te disparen, y ciertas unidades se mueven más rapido que otras por los bosques. Incluso si hay casas, los soldados se pueden meter dentro para disparar por las ventanas.

En esta partida se enfrentaron los elfos oscuros de mi amigo Ángel contra un ejercito de reyes funerarios, un ejército de no muertos con aspecto egipcio.

La verdad es que jugar así gana mucho, pero, como siempre, hay que tener mucho tiempo y ser bueno pintando o tener mucha pasta y encargar que te pinten el ejército.
