Why Do You Build Me Up?

I finished The Princess Bride a couple of nights ago, so it’s official: I’ve read 56 books this year. The book was a lot of fun, and since I’m pretty sure everybody has seen the movie, I don’t think it’s necessary to elaborate.
I’ve only seen the movie once (and it was only four years ago), and, from what I remember, it’s a faithful adaptation of the book. Then again, William Goldman wrote both, so it’d be kinda hard to be otherwise.I liked the story, but my favorite part was probably all the fake real story surrounding the book, and how Goldman talked to Stephen King, and Goldman’s family –the fat kid, the bitchy wife-. They’re nicely intertwined, and even though those interludes break the pace occassionally, they’re entertaining. So, go ahead and spend some (more) time with Westley and Buttercup. It’s fun!

Happy New Year’s Eve Eve, finn5fel!!!

Sky Doll

A few posts ago, I mentioned Sky Doll, the series created by Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa. As I said before, Barbucci’s artwork is fantastic. It has a decidedly Disney flavor (he used to work for them), and the facial expressions, the costumes, the backgrounds, and the clothing are superb. At the same time, Canepa’s colors are nothing short of outstanding, giving the book a pastel warmth that I, personally, adore.
And what about the story? Well, how could you not love a satire on religion, a story that makes fun of fanatics, popes (actually, they’re female popes, and at one point there were two ruling together), and spotlights the hypocresy and business side of religion. On top of that, sex dolls are all the rage (and they just became legal), and one of them, who seems to be a little different because of her memories that she can actually keep, decides it’s time to move on and get away from her job: a spaceshipwash in which the customers can ogle all they want at the plastic beauties that clean their rides.
I couldn’t have liked the first volume more, with all its satire; and the second and third installments only take things further on, so I encourage everybody to check it out (you can buy it here). As always, you can thank me later.

Algo Se Muere En El Alma

Día a día. Semana a semana. Mes a mes. Año a año.
Y hambre. Y frío y miseria. Y seis hijos (uno enterrado ya).
Sesenta y dos años, y ahora te me has ido.

K is for Talent

I came to Spain looking for K, a comic book drawn by Humberto Ramos, one of my favorite artists. I knew the first issue had been published by a French publisher early in the year, and I was hoping it would have been released here. And luckily, it had.
The series is –I think- going to be three issues, and Big Bang Baby, the first installment, is excellent. Ramos does his magic and depicts a futuristic world with spaceship and galactic catastrophes, while, at the same time, introducing the seven main characters and a bunch of supporting ones, all of them easily recognizable and very different from one another.
The story is good, but it’s only the introduction to what’s going to happen, and little else happens other than the setting of the stage. Still, it’s a good read, with gorgeous artwork, and shows a lot of promise. You could do worse than checking it out!

GMeP: IaWL – The Richest Man In Town

I know I’m not being the most original man on earth today, December 25th, posting this Great Moment On Screen. But I can’t help myself. I just can’t. It’s a Wonderful Life may be the most aired film on Christmas day ever. And, with that and all, it’s still one of the great classics of all time. It’s still fresh and powerful, moving and, yes finn5fel, yes, also compelling.
It was premiered in 1946, and directed by Frank Capra, who was also responsible for other incredibly great films of the 30s and 40s such as Arsenic and Old Lace, It Happened One Night, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Or even for the delightful Pocketful of Miracles, in 1961.
I suppose all of you have seen the movie by now. All of you will know about the story of George Bailey, a good man who is driven to the verge of suicide to be saved by an angel who simply shows him what life on earth would had been if he had never been born. The video linked includes the nine last minutes of the film, so if any one of you still hasn’t watched IaWL, don’t dare pressing play, and instead go buying, renting, or even begging it. And watch it, enjoy it, and thank me later.
Merry Christmas, and, quoting Mr. Paul Levinson, “happy Hannukah, good Kwanzaa and successful Winter Solstice”. Or whatever you believe in. Just be happy.

PS.- No matter how many times do I see this scene, I always end crying like a baby. Such emotive, beautiful... Ehem... I think I’m going to watch football or something now.

PSS.- And, speaking of IaWL, take a look at what great editing can do on this other YouTube video.
