MI4: Protocolo fantasma

Empezamos el año con una buena película de acción, y eso que es la cuarta entrega de la saga.

Como en los anteriores casos, un cambio de dirección da un aire nuevo a la saga, que no se queda anquilosada. Eso sí, tendremos lo de siempre: malos malosos sin escrúpulos, coches impresionantes, mujeres aún más impresionantes, y mucha, mucha acción. Afortunadamente, la película cuenta con unos personajes muy bien definidos, no tan planos como en otras pelis del género, y con un toque de humor sarcástico del cual hacía tiempo que no disfrutaba en una peli. Y de la trama mejor no hablo, porque es de lo más simple y predecible, pero claro: todo no se puede tener.

En resumen, Protocolo fantasma es una película muy recomendable para pasar un buen rato.

Más pelis chulas

Desde que nos suscribimos a Xbox Live, mi querida esposa y yo hemos dejado de ir al cine con la frecuencia con que lo hacíamos y hemos pasado a ver películas streameadas en nuestra salita, lejos de los maleducados que te estropean la experiencia cuando sales de casa para ver algo en la pantalla grande. Como nos gusta la variedad, hemos estado viendo películas de todos los géneros, y aquí tenéis, sin ningún orden particular, unas cuantas pelis que nos han gustado en las últimas semanas:

Hemos visto muchas, muchas más, pero ésas son las que más hemos disfrutado, especialmente Horrible Bosses en la categoría de comedias y Triangle en la de películas de intriga/sucesos difíciles de explicar/paradojas espacio-temporales, categoría ésta bastante cerrada y restringida. Strike Back

Estoy empezando a ver esta serie, basada en otra inglesa, sobre un grupo de operaciones encubiertas de la sección 20 inglesa. Ya sabéis: el típico equipo que opera al margen de la ley en cualquier lugar del mundo para "coger" terroristas. Los episodios son de uno 40 minutos, con bastante acción, pero muy bien llevada, y sin exageraciones: ni los buenos son la hostia, ni los malos son mancos. Siguiendo la estela de las series de HBO, las heridas/muertes son muy realistas y siempre hay una o varias mujeres por episodio que se pasean ligeras de ropa.

Los personajes principales del comando, un inglés y un americano, están muy bien conseguidos, cada unos con sus peculiaridades y pasado. Los secundarios también están geniales; especial mención requiere el coronel al mando del equipo, que tiene un cierto aire al actor que hacia de T1000 en Terminator.

En resumen: si tenéis tiempo, tiene muy buena pinta la serie.

Run for Your Life

Here you have a quick picture I drew in about 40 minutes with my Copic markers. For those of you who don't know the game, the picture will make no sense, but this is an homage to Supaplex, one of my favorite puzzle games of all time. In this old game you control Murphy, "the red Pacman," and you have to find a certain number of infotrons per level in order to advance to the next one. However, there are dangers everywhere, and the most vicious enemies of them all are the Snick-Snacks, also known as the red scissors that chase you and make you explode on contact. Needless to say, that is the scene I decided to go for when the idea to draw a Supaplex picture came to me. In any case, go play the game if you never have, and I hope you enjoy both the game and the picture!

Am I Jaded?

Or is Hollywood getting worse and worse? Or perhaps my taste in movies is changing, but I don't think so. Let me backtrack for a second.

My wife and I went to see the new Sherlock Holmes the other day, and pretty much all the trailers that played before the feature looked appallingly horrible. What makes this distressing is the fact that said previews were for movies that I though I would be interested in seeing, or that, a long time ago, I would have found interesting. Not so much anymore, and my question is why. I still like fantasy and science fiction. I still like comic books. I still like special effects, and I still like to be blown away by a movie that shows me things I've never seen before. And maybe that's where the problem lies: that everything those previews had to offer seemed like some rehash of something I've seen before. The previews that apparently made me so despondent were The Dark Knight Rises, Battleship, Men in Black 3, and John Carter of Mars. Let's look at each one of them in slightly more detail.

1. The Dark Knight Rises is probably going to be a cool movie; after all, the first two Nolan-directed Batmans were pretty fantastic. However, this preview, which, admittedly, didn't show much, looked lackluster and spectacularly uninteresting. Will I go see the movie? Probably, because I trust Christopher Nolan. Did this preview want to make me go see the movie? Quite the contrary: it made me want to run in the opposite direction.

2. Battleship is the movie version of the old game, which in and on itself is a stupid idea. I do like alien-invasion movies, though, but this one looks so generic and uninspired that almost made me cry in despair and disappointment.

3. MIB3 should have looked awesome. I love sci-fi, Will Smith, and time travel, and this movie features all three... and yet it looked tired, boring, and repetitive. And in case you're wondering, I did like the first two, but I always thought they could have been better.

4. I had been dying to see previews for John Carter of Mars, and even my friends had said it looked pretty awesome, but, what can I say? It looked, well... not too exciting or appealing, but at least it looked better than the previous three. Will I see it when it opens? I don't really know.

So why didn't I care about any of those previews that would have made me drool just a few years ago? Maybe I'm getting tired of the same meal being cooked and reheated time after time after time, or maybe I'm becoming movie snob who only likes quirky tales like Martin Scorsese's Hugo. I think the former is more likely than the latter, though, because I still enjoy big mainstream movies such as Sherlock Holmes, but I don't know. Does the same happen to you? Are you jaded as well, or is originality in Hollywood really experiencing a slow, painful death?

Diez pelis estupendas

Aquí tenéis mi lista de las diez películas que más me han gustado este año. La verdad es que varios puestos podrían cambiarse un poco y tampoco pasaría nada, pero como tengo que escoger un orden concreto, bien vale éste:

Como ya comenté todas estas películas en su día, no voy a repetirme, así que, si estáis interesados en ver qué dije sobre cada una de ellas, no tenéis más que hacer click en la etiqueta "movies" ahí debajo, y leer la que os interese. Ya me diréis qué os parecen mis selecciones, y cuáles han sido vuestras pelis favoritas de 2011!

La identidad de Bourne

Otra de las películas que llevaba mucho tiempo queriendo ver es La identidad de Bourne, de la que había leído muy buenas críticas y de la que solo había visto la segunda parte. Como gran seguidor de la saga de novelas de Bourne, la película me decepcionó un poco dado que es bastante inferior al libro en lo que a la intriga se refiere. No obstante, he de reconocer que es una muy buena cinta de acción, los personajes están muy bien llevados, y las escenas de acción (que suponen casi todo el metraje) son trepidantes. Matt Damon hace unas peleas muy creíbles y espectaculares por la velocidad de sus movimientos, y la persecución en coche por París es de las mejores que he visto.

Algunas cosas son chorradas, como la de meterte bajo la piel un láser donde tienes tu número de cuenta y un banco cuando los espías tienen todo eso en la cabeza, pero bueno.

En resumen: si tenéis tiempo, es una saga muy entretenida, aunque yo recomiendo mucho más los libros…. al menos hasta el tercero, pues luego ya se vuelve un poco cansina.
