Summer Movie Madness

As we all know, summertime equals blockbuster season in Hollywood, and this year is no exception to the rule. Strangely, the movies I’m most interested in seeing will be opening in May for the most part, but there is plenty of goodness left for the three official summer months. This is what I’m dying to see this busy, busy season:

V. May
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May 1)
I know an almost finished version of the movie was leaked online and the reviews were less than stellar, but it’s Wolverine, and Gambit and Deadpool are in the movie, so I’ll go see it.

Star Trek (May 8)
I’ve never been a Star Trek fan, but the previews look really cool, so I guess I’ll have to go and check it out.

Angels & Demons (May 15)
I really liked the book, and this time Tom Hanks’s hair doesn’t look retarded.

Terminator: Salvation (May 21)
I’m hoping they have Christian Bale’s infamous rant as an after-the-credits Easter egg. Wouldn’t that blow your mind?

Easy Virtue (May 22)
Jessica Biel being superhot. ‘Nuff said!

Up (May 29)
Pixar’s new movie! Woohoo!

Drag me to Hell (May 29)
Sam Raimi’s return to the horror genre he loves so much. Will Bruce Campbell have a cameo? We can only hope.

Public Enemies (July 1)
Johnny Depp as the notorious John Dillinger? Christian Bale (apparently ubiquitous nowadays) as FBI agent Melvin Purvis trying to stop him? Michael Mann directing? I’m really hoping there’s a midnight show because this is the day I fly to Spain, and I am cursing myself for having to wait until I’m back to see it. Let’s all cross our fingers and whisper: midnight show, midnight show…

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (July 17)
Do I really need to justify this pick? A shame I’ll be in Spain, though, but I’ll try to catch it when I’m in San Diego.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (August 7)
Okay, maybe I’m not crazy about this movie (I haven’t even see the previews yet), but I’ll probably end up going to see it anyway, so I won’t even try to fight it.

The Time Traveler’s Wife (August 14)
Based on the phenomenal book, I’m sure I will be disappointed, but I will so be there on opening day.

Ponyo (August 14)
The latest Miyazaki animated feature, it is sure to be as quirky and delightful as his previous masterpieces.

Inglourious Basterds (August 21)
Quentin Tarantino is back, and Brad Pitt’s got his back. And I’m sure there will be thousands and thousands of expletives and fake blood. Fun!

Llévame al aeropuerto

Como tengo mucha cara, he decidido mostraros los extras de la tercera página de Worlds Collide en una entrada aparte. Aunque no lo he hecho sólo por tener un post más (que también), sino porque tengo tanto material extra de esta página que bien se merece una entrada propia. (Ahora es cuando os lo creéis.)

En primer lugar tenemos el boceto original. Como ya pudisteis apreciar en el boceto de la entrada anterior, estos bocetos pequeñitos los hago bastante rápido y sin muchos detalles, aunque, al mismo tiempo, se pueden ver todos los personajes, disposición espacial, y parte del diálogo. Escribir estas frases me ayuda a decidir el lenguaje corporal cuando me pongo a dibujar la página en serio, algo que en esta fase no es tan importante y por eso puedo dibujarla sin muchas florituras.

A continuación, podéis ver la primera viñeta a lápiz. Al principio no iba a hacer lápices demasiado detallados, pero al final opté por hacerlo porque así los dibujos acabados me quedan mejor. La única desventaja es que cada página me cuesta más tiempo hacerla, obviamente. Sin embargo, hay algunas partes o personajes que no acabo tanto, como podéis ver en esta viñeta.

En tercer lugar tenemos la segunda viñeta, de la que no tengo demasiado que decir, la verdad. Al principio iba a incluir más personajes en el fondo, pero al final opté por no hacerlo, y no sólo por ahorrarme trabajo, sino para darle un toque de realismo, pues, normalmente, una vez llegas a esta parte de los aeropuertos (o espaciopuertos) no hay tanta gente como cuando bajas del avión. O la nave espacial.

Y para terminar, y acompañando esta entrada, podéis ver una foto de la página a mitad hacer, una vez empecé con los rotuladores. Incluyo esta foto para que veáis que, como cuando se rueda una película, no me siento obligado a terminar las viñetas en orden cronológico, sino que muchas veces voy dando saltos de aquí a allá en la página. A veces lo hago por cuestiones de tiempo, y otras veces responde a la energía que tenga o lo mucho que me apetezca llegar a una viñeta en particular.

Y creo que esta página ya no da más de sí, así que vamos a terminar este Making of aquí mismo. Estad atentos a la cuarta página, que sale, como siempre, en tres días!

Worlds Collide #3

Here you have the third page of Worlds Collide, in which Dhraya and Koori seem to be really happy to see each other. As they walk toward Dhraya's vehicle, the crowd thins out progressively, which is usually the case at the airport, at least in my experience. I like the three characters in the first panel's background, and I wonder who the old lady is and what she does for a living. As for the ship, I wanted it to look old and kind of retro, even if it is a futuristic car of sorts. Dhraya is a college student, and I thought she couldn't afford anything better than this, and that's what the dialogue tries to reinforce. But let me know what you think!

Está claro que se puede hacer arte con cualquier material, pero éste lo bueno que tiene es que si te sale male, te lo comes y punto. Espero que os gusten y que os diviertan tanto como a mí.

Nobles elfos oscuros

Aquí os presento unas de mis últimas creaciones: dos nuevos nobles elfos oscuros para mi ejército, El primero, Esmili, es hijo de Vheto Slidecaster y está al mando de las tropas de infantería. Suele ir acompañado de la unidad de corsarios, piratas elfos oscuros que con sus barcos se dedican a saquear los pueblos costeros de los Altos elfos (fijaos en el detalle de su pie sobre el casco de uno de sus odiados enemigos). La capa es de piel de dragon marino, unas criaturas que habitan el fondo de los mares. Dado que sus escamas son muy resistentes y ligeras, los elfos oscuros suelen cubrirse con ellas para esta mejor protegidos, ya que no es que sean muy resistentes.

La otra es Mirith, hermana de Esmili que, como él, prefiere el combate cuerpo a cuerpo a quedarse dirigiendo a las tropas como debería ser.

Como a todas las hembras de cualquier raza, le encantan los modelitos aunque no sean los más apropiados para entrar en combate. Eso sí: está muy pero que muy buena. Cómo se nota que los escultores de miniaturas son hombres, y los que las compran también. Espero que os gusten ya contáis.

The Best of... Guns N' Roses

Como ya hice hace algunos meses con AC/DC, he pensado confeccionar otro de esos Top Ten musicales que tanto me gustan. Y esta vez he elegido un grupo que fácilmente formó parte de la banda sonora de las vidas de todos los hoy treintañeros: la banda californiana Guns N' Roses.

Durante su corta carrera editaron cinco albums de estudio y un directo. Y no, no cuento la etapa post-1996, en la cual Axl Rose prácticamente ha formado otra banda sin pagar peaje alguno. En esta lista no encontraréis ninguno de los temas de Chinese Democracy, el tan esperado CD editado en noviembre del año pasado, y no sólo porque ninguno de ellos tendría cabida en ella, cualitativamente hablando. Éste es un Top Ten sobre la época dorada de Guns N' Roses, que coincidió con el comienzo de mi adolescencia: el final de los años ochenta, y el principio de los noventa.

1.Estranged
Durante nueve minutos y veintiún segundos este tema compuesto por Axl Rose repite los mismos acordes, los mismos fraseos, al cadente ritmo marcado por la batería de Matt Sorum y el piano del propio Axl. El resultado, lejos de resultar pesado, es una canción redonda, perfecta, en la que, como de costumbre, la guitarra de Slash brilla con luz propia. Mención aparte merece su videoclip, plagado de las dos señas de identidad de los videos de la banda: imágenes oníricas y modelos de Victoria's Secret.

2.Patience
El único tema presente en esta lista del segundo disco de la banda es esta balada acústica con epílogo. Fue compuesta por Izzy Stradlin, quien, aún a la sombra de Axl y Slash, no dejaba de demostrar su envidiable talento. Lástima que resultara ser de ese tipo de estrellas del rock que se mean en los pasillos de los aviones.

3.Sweet Child o’ Mine
El tercer puesto lo ocupa el tema sin duda más reconocible de la banda, que hizo popular el sonido Guns N’ Roses. Según la leyenda, el famoso fraseo que Slash toca a la guitarra surgió como una broma, un ejercicio de digitación. Apenas cinco minutos después, un clásico había nacido.

4.Nightrain
El cuarto puesto es para la tercera pista del álbum debut de la banda, Appetite for Destruction, un ejemplo de hard rock con ritmo contagioso. "I smoke my cigarette with style..."

5.November Rain
Otra canción de rock épico compuesta por Axl Rose, se podría decir que "November Rain" fue el "Stairway to Heaven" de Guns N’ Roses. O su "Bohemian Rhapsody", dada la admiración que Axl tenía por el cuarteto inglés Queen.

6.Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door
Guns N’ Roses fueron un grupo muy dado a las versiones, y entre todas las que acometieron destaca con luz propia esta adaptación del conocidísimo tema compuesto por Bob Dylan. El video linkado no es de la grabación de estudio, sino de su actuación en Wembley durante el concierto homenaje a Freddie Mercury. Demandadme.

7.Welcome to the Jungle
Este tema abría el disco debut de la banda, para muchos (entre los que me incluyo) su mejor álbum. Tras apenas un par de años luchando por alcanzar el éxito, fue con este rudo canto a la lujuria con el que GN’R se presentaron al mundo.

8.Don’t Cry
Axl Rose e Izzy Stradlin compusieron esta balada de corte clásico y tema autorreferencial que el propio Axl culmina con uno de esos alardes a los que era tan dado: veintisiete segundos de modulación vocal.

9.You Could Be Mine
¿Quién no recuerda a un adolescente John Connor conduciendo su motocicleta por las calles de Los Angeles en Terminator 2 al ritmo de este tema? De nuevo fue el tándem Axl Rose/Izzy Stradlin el que compuso esta conocida pieza de hard rock.

10.Since I Don’t Have You
Dice la leyenda que Axl Rose solía cantar en la ducha este tema de los Skyliners, y Slash le instó a versionarlo. Sea como fuere, esta balada abrió el que sería el último disco de la banda antes de su ruptura, “The Spaghetti Incident?”, que no incluía ni un solo tema original.

Take me to the Mansion

Okay, I confess: I enjoyed The House Bunny. I thought Anna Faris was really funny, and the movie as a whole was cute, outrageous, and very entertaining. I think my favorite part (other than the hot girls, obviously) was Faris's character, Shelley Darlingson, mistaking words and just continuing the conversation as if that was the right meaning to the word. And also then the exact opposite: when she would use extremely unusual words the right way and in the right context, and everyone would be baffled because (a) they didn't expect it, or (b) they didn't know what the word meant. Here you have a couple of examples from IMDB:

Natalie: Shelley knows how to meet guys, hence, we will learn how to meet guys.
Shelley: Yeah, hence!

Mrs. Hagstrom: This is not a brothel.
Shelley: Oh, I'm not looking to make soup.

Shelley: [puts on Natalie's glasses] God, you need to go to the eye doctor!
Natalie: I did. That's where I got my glasses.

And a thousand other similar examples that had me rolling on the floor.

Anna Faris, who came with the idea for the movie and exec produces and stars in the film, shows how clever she actually is by putting out this movie and flawlessly embodying this ditzy but adorable Playboy Playmate who gets kicked out of the Playboy mansion because she's too old. (She just turned twenty-seven, which is “59 in bunny years".) From there, the movie is not exactly original (she teams up with a bunch of losers so everyone learns a valuable lesson from each other and overcome their difficulties), but it is funny, fearless, and the dialogue is really funny. ("Who wants to sacrifice another virgin?")

To sum it up, and while The House Bunny is not exactly award-winning material, you underestimate this movie at your peril. The witty lines and Faris's great portrayal of Shelley elevate a very archetypical comedy and make it something worth seeing, so go check it out and then tell us what you think!
